Tartu is recognized as a platinum level Green Destination
The beautiful nature around Tartu and the lush green spaces throughout the city make it a wonderful destination. But it’s not just the greenery that makes a place truly sustainable! Meeting climate goals and promoting sustainable development are the key. Tartu’s commitment to these efforts is recognized with a Platinum award from the Green Destinations program, which Tartu has been a part of since 2020. Additionally, Tartu is one of the 100 cities chosen by the European Commission to be climate-neutral and smart by the year 2030.
Green Destinations Program
Green Destinations is an internationally recognized program, with over 200 destinations participating worldwide.
The Green Destinations program allows destinations to learn from the best practices of other partners, engage external experts, and strategically analyze various sectors. The program helps identify ways to make the tourism sector more sustainable by using existing resources in the best possible way.
A destination applying for the quality label provides a detailed overview of how different areas related to sustainable development are functioning within the region.
Green Destinations Audit
The overall rating of destinations is divided into five levels, listed from lowest to highest: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and the highest level is GSTC Certified Green Destination.

The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition annually celebrates and promotes sustainable tourism initiatives from destinations globally.
Green Key in Tartu
Green Key began in 1994 in Denmark and has since become a leading standard for recognizing the environmental and sustainable practices of tourism businesses. Nearly 60 countries worldwide have joined the program. In Estonia, the label has been awarded since 2001.
Green Museum Certificate
The Green Museum certificate, managed by the Estonian Association for Environmental Management, helps museums assess and reduce the environmental impact of their activities and contribute to the societal green transition.
