Tartu has received international recognition for its long-term and sustainable efforts in developing the banks of the Emajõgi River. The city’s project “Emajõgi – The Binding River: Drawing Inhabitants Closer in Tartu”, submitted by Visit Tartu, was awarded first place in the “Riverside Heritage” category of the Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards 2023. The competition received over 60 entries from 25 European countries.

The awards were presented within the framework of the Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards 2023, organized by the European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN) in cooperation with Europa Nostra, the European Travel Commission (ETC), and the European Travel Commission, with support from the European Commission. The aim of the awards is to highlight best practices that promote sustainable and community-based cultural tourism across Europe.

The goal of the Emajõgi riverside development project is to strengthen the connection between the city of Tartu and the river by creating a multifunctional urban space where everyday life, cultural heritage, and recreation coexist. The developments have resulted in new relaxation areas, cafés, and promenades that make the riverbanks an attractive space for both locals and visitors.

The international jury highlighted several key strengths of the project. First, the revitalization of public space was praised — the riverbanks have been transformed into a modern and diverse urban environment, featuring seating areas, cafés, and high-quality infrastructure that provide opportunities for enjoyable leisure time. Second, the project was recognized for its climate-friendly management practices, which apply nature-based solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change in the urban setting. Third, the project demonstrated strong community involvement and cross-sectoral cooperation, led by Visit Tartu, NGO Lodjakoda, and various local partners. Cultural events such as the Emajõgi Festival and Autovabaduse puiestee (Freedom from Cars Boulevard) were also commended for bringing people closer to the river and reinforcing the connection between residents, visitors, and the heart of the city.

The awarded project is part of a broader vision for Tartu that integrates the historic river with contemporary urban lifestyle and tourism development. Over the years, the area has earned the nickname “Emajõgi Riviera” — a vibrant meeting place where nature, culture, and joy of life come together.

The award ceremony took place during the European Cultural Tourism Conference, held this year in Pafos, Cyprus, a city that holds the title of European Capital of Smart Tourism 2023.
