In June 2025, Tartu’s accommodation establishments hosted 25,959 guests, an increase of 9.94% compared to the same period last year, with overnight stays up by 5.73%. The number of Lithuanian tourists more than doubled.
In June, there were slightly more foreign visitors than domestic ones – 13,628 foreign guests and 12,331 domestic tourists. The number of foreign visitors increased by 14.06% compared to June last year, and their overnight stays grew by as much as 23.8%. Domestic tourist numbers rose by 5.73%, and their overnight stays by 11.4%.
The occupancy rate of Tartu’s accommodation establishments in June was 60%, the second highest in Estonia after Tallinn (67%). The average daily rate in Tartu was €44, compared to €67 in Tallinn. Visitors to Tartu stayed an average of 1.69 nights in June 2025.
“The number of Lithuanian tourists in Tartu has more than doubled, showing that our targeted activities in the Baltic market are delivering clear results,” said Annika Ojasaar, Head of Tourism for the City of Tartu. “Together with partners, we have promoted Tartu in Lithuanian summer media articles, supported the visibility of the Tartu–Riga–Vilnius rail connection, and gained additional attention thanks to the Science Centre AHHAA’s activities in Latvia and Lithuania. This kind of cooperation increases awareness and makes Tartu an attractive destination for visitors from further afield.”
Most guests staying in Tartu’s official accommodation establishments in June came from Finland (3,763), Latvia (2,132), Germany (1,843), Lithuania (1,312) and the United Kingdom (517). The number of visitors from Lithuania more than doubled compared to the previous year, rising from 552 to 1,312.
Compared to June 2019, the average length of stay for foreign visitors in Tartu has increased from 1.63 nights to 1.81 nights, marking a significant quality improvement in the sector.
In the first six months of 2025, Tartu’s accommodation establishments hosted 126,686 guests, 1.27% more than in the same period last year. The number of foreign visitors increased by 11.65%, and their overnight stays by 21.1%.
Tartu County as a whole hosted 29,134 guests in June, up 7.46% from last year. The number of foreign visitors grew by 12.67% and their overnight stays by 22.3%, while domestic visitor numbers rose by 2.95% and their overnight stays by 6.4%. The average length of stay was 1.69 nights, occupancy was 51%, and the average daily rate was €44. The strong growth in results is largely due to the good performance of the city of Tartu.
In South Estonia as a whole, 54,367 guests stayed overnight in June, 2.47% more than last year. The number of foreign visitors increased by 9.5% and their overnight stays by 15.3%, but domestic visitor numbers fell by 0.48% and their overnight stays by 3.4%. The average length of stay was 1.75 nights.
Statistics Estonia publishes accommodation statistics with a two-month delay and only for officially registered accommodation establishments. In June 2025, there were 37 registered accommodation establishments in the city of Tartu. More data can be found in the Tartu and South Estonia accommodation statistics dashboard. In addition, according to AirDNA, there are currently 630 short-term rental properties in Tartu, and guests staying in them are not included in the official accommodation statistics.
