Throughout the summer, guided Saturday walking tours invite visitors to discover Tartu’s stories, hidden corners, and laid-back summer atmosphere, offering a wonderfully complete picture of the city.
Yet much of Tartu’s charm also lies in the little things: a peaceful morning coffee, a stroll along the riverside, an unexpected concert, or a cosy hidden spot you might otherwise never discover. That’s exactly why we created this list: 50 ways to bloom in Tartu. Both literally and figuratively, through small yet meaningful moments.
1) Visit the charming secret garden of Mandel cake shop while it is in full bloom. Tucked away in the peaceful Tähtvere neighbourhood, this little garden is the perfect place to escape the city buzz, listen to birdsong, and enjoy delicious cakes with a great cup of coffee. In summer, cake shop Mandel’s charming house is framed by lush flower baskets and colourful blossoms, making it one of Tartu’s most beloved photo spots.
2) Let yourself bloom at HOPP Disain gallery store. The newly expanded gallery store on Town Hall Square is full of unique and personal design finds. You can also hunt for cool second-hand treasures at Saiko, while the Karud ja Pojad studio shop charms visitors with creations by different artists and a carefully curated selection of vintage clothing, all surrounded by plenty of floral beauty.
3) Weave a midsummer flower crown or make a traditional sauna whisk. On the most magical evening of the Estonian summer, on June 23, the shores of Raadi Lake come alive with Midsummer celebrations, workshops, folk-inspired atmosphere, dancing, and live music that continues long into the night.
4) Soak up the lively atmosphere of Tartu’s Old Town during the Old Town Festival Tartu Buzz. For two weeks in August, the historic centre of Tartu fills with creativity, live music, and warm encounters. Pop-up restaurants, street food trucks, and picnic areas invite visitors to discover both familiar favourites and exciting new tastes right in the heart of the city this August. Alongside the food, you can sample a rich selection of wines from around the world.
7) Enjoy summer evenings filled with world-class music. Alongside beloved local traditions, this summer brings artists such as ZZ Top, John Legend, and Moby to Tartu. The alternative pop music festival Tartu Punch will also feature both Estonian and international stars.
8) Experience the thrilling atmosphere of Delfi Rally Estonia in South Estonia. In July, the ninth stage of the World Rally Championship takes drivers onto the fast and winding gravel roads of South Estonia.
9) Head into the forest with Forest for Rest. Discover summer blooms in a buzzing, wonderfully fragrant forest using all five senses. These guided forest bathing experiences help your senses slowly awaken, just like a dandelion stretching open in the morning sun.
10) Enjoy a refreshing drink called “Flower Party” (“Lillepidu”) on the summer terrace of the Beer Museum. Located inside a historic malt tower, the museum takes visitors on a journey through the story of beer, with fascinating exhibits, different malts to taste, and even an art exhibition. 11) Sail along the Emajõgi River on a traditional wooden barge. From the deck, you can admire blooming riverbanks and bright yellow globeflowers while quietly drifting through summertime Tartu. 13) Experience a true classic of Tartu’s café culture at Werner. The display counters are filled with beloved cakes, pastries, and baked treats created by renowned confectioner Õie Pritson, whose first name even means “blossom” in Estonian. The cakes and pastries at Toome Café are also inspired by Estonian nature and made from local ingredients. They are beautifully decorated with edible flowers that are carefully picked, dried, and placed by hand.
14) Visit the Kastani Community Garden. Hidden in the courtyard beside Aparaaditehas, near the TYPA centre and Ajuokse’s summer hangar, the Kastani Community Garden has recently been refreshed with a new look. 16) Pick up flower-themed books at Biblioteek. Bloom alongside Anni Arro’s cookbook “Through Flowers”, learn a poem from the collection “Hortus Poeticus: Estonian Plant Poetry”, or play a flower-themed memory game with your child.
17) Discover the world of botanical illustration at the University of Tartu Natural History Museum. The exhibition “Hortus Poeticus: Three Garden Flowers” brings phlox, chrysanthemums, and gladioli to life through the work of nine different artists. The exhibition was created alongside the poetry collection “Hortus Poeticus”.
18) Relax in the urban meadows of Uueturu Park or around the Estonian National Museum. In Tartu, some green spaces are left to grow wild and free, allowing flowers to bloom in their own rhythm and insects to buzz peacefully around them. Alongside Viktoria Berezina’s mural, a new floral-themed artwork by Kairo will also appear there. The area between the garages will host Maikro’s “City Garden” exhibition, turning the neighbourhood into a true open-air gallery well worth exploring together with the local Mikrogalerii.
20) Let South Estonia’s relaxed sense of time guide you. In May, a new street art piece called “The 13th Hour” appeared on the wall of the legendary Atlantis building by the Emajõgi River. The artwork symbolises the idea that in Southern Estonia, time is not measured in minutes, but in light, growth, and pauses.
