On 18 March 2026, the Lydia Conference Centre hosted the international conference “International Research Cooperation – with Ukraine and for Ukraine”.

The event brought together researchers, research managers, and policy makers from Estonia, Ukraine, and several other European countries.

The conference focused on strengthening research cooperation with Ukraine in the broader context of the European Research Area. The programme included national and international perspectives on supporting the resilience of Ukraine’s research and innovation system. Estonian universities presented Ukraine-focused initiatives, alongside examples and experience sharing from joint research projects.

Discussions concentrated on how to address Ukraine’s research and development (R&D) needs in a practical and effective way. A panel discussion explored opportunities for building long-term and sustainable cooperation, with emphasis on institutional support mechanisms and collaboration between researchers.

The event was organized by the Estonian Research Council in cooperation with the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, and supported by the Estonian Centre for International Development. The conference was held in a hybrid format, allowing participation both on-site in Tartu and online.

Tartu had the honour of being at the center of this important international dialogue, bringing together experts and partners to discuss support for Ukraine’s research system and the future of European research cooperation.
