Spring is in the air in Tartu

Spring is a special time. With every passing day, you can feel that winter is slowly giving way to spring – even if there is still some snow on the ground. The city begins to feel more lively, and the days are clearly getting longer and brighter. Green shoots start to peek out from under the snow, buds appear on the trees, and the arrival of warmer days becomes more noticeable day by day. There is spring in the air, and after several months of winter, it feels especially welcome.

Here you will find ideas for enjoying the transition from winter to spring in Tartu.

People in Tartu love enjoying the fresh air in every season and in all kinds of weather. Here it is easy to find places for a walk or simply to spend some time outdoors. Dress in layers so you can comfortably adjust to the ever-changing spring weather – and head outside! If you like, you can also hop on a bike from the city’s bike share system to get around.

Tartu’s neighbourhoods each have their own character and offer plenty to discover. You will find lively streets, colourful street art and fascinating historic wooden architecture. Our region is also full of beautiful natural spots where you can enjoy the arrival of spring. For inspiration, take a look at our walking map.

Even in the Old Town you will find charming pockets of nature, but if you feel like getting a little further away from the city buzz, head out to explore Tartu County.

Culture and events to enjoy

Spring is a wonderful time to enjoy Tartu’s museums and cultural life. On a cooler day, it is especially nice to step into one of the city’s many museums, where there is plenty to discover for both adults and children. Exhibitions change regularly, so even a museum you have visited before may surprise you with something new and exciting.

Beyond museums, Tartu also offers a diverse cultural programme for visitors of all ages. Concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and many other exciting events provide a great reason to combine your visit to Tartu with a memorable cultural experience – or even to plan a trip here especially for it.

Before your visit, take a look at the Kultuuriaken website to find something exciting happening during your stay.

Although Tartu passed the title of Estonia’s official food region to Jõgevamaa at the beginning of the year, delicious food experiences continue here just the same – from Lake Võrtsjärv to Lake Peipus.

In both the city of Tartu and the surrounding county, you will find many well-loved cafés and restaurants, as well as several new places waiting to be discovered.

It is also worth visiting Tartu’s markets, where you can find fresh and local produce directly from the producers. Markets are a great place to pick up authentic regional flavours, from seasonal ingredients to farm products and offerings from small local producers.

If you would like even more ideas for things to do, stop by the Tartu Tourist Information Centre, where you can get recommendations as well as free maps and brochures to help you explore the city.
