On Saturday, December 14, at 1:00 PM, approximately 1,500 folk dancers from Tartu and beyond will gather in the Christmas city to perform 15 traditional dances.
The 15th anniversary of the Winter Folk Dance Day will bring a record number of folk dancers to the Town Hall Square. “The repertoire includes familiar classics like Perekonnavalss and Vengerka, as well as dances that have never been performed at a winter event before,” said artistic director Raul Markus Vaiksoo, who described the event’s programme. The traditional dances will be accompanied by musicians from the Folklore Club Maatasa, and the day will be hosted by Kairi Leivo.

After the Dance Day, a lively party (simman) will take place at the Gunpowder Cellar (Püssirohukelder), featuring dance music by Karoliina Kreintaal and Arno Tamm. Additionally, from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Tartu Christmas Market will be open in the city center, offering high-quality Estonian handicrafts and Christmas treats.

The entire week in Tartu’s Christmas city is filled with exciting activities. Today, December 10, from 4 PM to 7 PM, VOCO will visit, offering opportunities to decorate gingerbread cookies, craft Christmas ornaments, and play guessing games at the stage pavilion.

On Wednesday, December 11, from 10 AM to 1 PM, the Tartu Observatory will host a fun orienteering game called “Adventure in Space,” which requires prior registration. From 4 PM to 7 PM, the Tartu Youth Work Center, in collaboration with the Tartu City History Museums, invites everyone to a workshop at the stage pavilion to craft Christmas elves, coins, and tree ornaments. From 6 PM to 7 PM, a free ice-skating lesson will also take place.

On Thursday, December 12, from 10:00 to 10:30 AM, a special Elf School session with Lotte will teach all her doggy friends the essentials of Christmas. On the same day, from 3 PM to 4 PM, Café Däp will hold a cake pop-making workshop at the stage pavilion.

On Friday, December 13, from 6 PM to 7 PM, the Tähe Viis and Fa-diees singing studios will host a Christmas concert featuring Christmas songs from various countries. On Saturday, December 14, from 4 PM to 6 PM, visitors can meet Santa Claus again in the Town Hall Square.

On Sunday, December 15, the third Advent candle will be lit, with greetings from Deputy Mayor Meelis Leidt and Pastor Toivo Pilli of the Tartu Salem Congregation. The ceremony begins at 6 PM with a light performance, “Towards the Stars”, blending astronomical perspectives with Estonian mythological beliefs about stars. The show will also be repeated at 7 PM and 8 PM. Additionally, from 11 AM to 12 PM, there will be another free ice-skating lesson.

The Christmas city cafés are open Monday to Thursday from 4 PM to 9 PM, Friday from 4 PM to 10 PM, and Saturday to Sunday from 10 AM to 10 PM.
