All Tartu residents are welcome to the courtyard of the Annelinn Library (Kaunase pst 23) on Tuesday, February 17 at 10:15, where Shrovetide will be celebrated with the opening of two large snow sculptures.

The library courtyard will be enriched by two unique snow sculptures, created by students of the Pallas Art School Sculpture Department. The young artists will be supervised by Mari Hiiemäe. The cooperation between the Tartu City Government and the Pallas Art School  gives students the opportunity to bring their creations to public urban space and bring joy to the community.

One sculpture depicts a carousel with animals. The work hints at a possible near future when the changes taking place in the world are so drastic that borders and familiar habitats are disappearing – animals that do not actually come into contact with each other in nature will meet on the carousel.

The second sculpture is a labyrinth that invites both younger and older visitors to discover it. The work, designed for climbing and crawling, offers the joy of movement and a little adventure in the middle of the winter city space.

On Shrovetide Day, in addition to an art experience, you can also experience some real winter joys at the Annelinn Library. Those who wish can try riding a push sled – it is an easy and fun way to get around in winter, which offers both excitement and a small sporting challenge. In addition, you can get acquainted with the exciting world of sled dogs – you can see and hear how these energetic dogs train, what their daily lives are like and what cooperation and trust in a dog team mean.

All city residents are welcome to celebrate Shrovetide Day with the whole family and enjoy the winter joys!

The area around the Annelinn Library is part of the ClimaGen project area. The project focuses on both the climate resilience of outdoor space and the development and revitalization of community space. The goal is to create a public space where it is good to come together, act together and try out various seasonal and community-engaging activities.
