An exhibition of modern Polish toys

Tartu Toy Museum opened the “Poola mängib / Poland Plays” exhibition introducing the creations of modern Polish toy manufacturer BAJO, where a black-and-white rainbow, wooden Manhattan skyscrapers and many more toys are on display.

BAJO, a family company operating in southern Poland, produces high-quality wooden toys that are not just classic trucks and building blocks. The designers of this company have found that in addition to kitties and teddy bears, high-rise buildings in big cities, a black and white rainbow and a megalith that can be assembled as a puzzle can invite you to play.

According to Marge Pärnits, one of the curators of the exhibition, in addition to the imaginative toys, the packaging is also worth checking out. “BAJO designers were among the first toy manufacturers to emphasize the importance of ecological packaging,” explains Pärnits. “They found that the toys themselves must be so attractive that they only need a simple brown cardboard box. That’s why we also included some packaging in the exhibition.”

You can try your hand at BAJO memorabilia and dexterity toys in the temporary play area built next to the “Poland plays” exhibition. However, the smallest museum visitors have the opportunity to take their first ride on a box bike.

The exhibition of modern Polish toys came to the Tartu Toy Museum with the help of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland. The exhibition is part of the series of satellite exhibitions held within the framework of the “Europe Plays” exhibition and is part of the additional program of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 and the “Toy Museum 30” program of the Tartu Toy Museum’s jubilee year.

The Tartu Toy Museum is located in the old town of Tartu on Lutsu street and is open all year round from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. Additional information about exhibitions, theater performances and workshops can be found at www.mm.ee/en or by calling + 372 7461 777.
