2020: City-wide bike sharing and city buses

In 2020, Tartu was included in the Green Destinations Top 100 Success Stories for its city-wide bike-sharing program and city buses running on renewable gas.

The goal of both success stories was to reduce car traffic, noise, and air pollution in the city center.

The use of renewable energy sources is one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (in addition to the efficient and sustainable use of fuels). The biogas (natural gas) used in buses is the cleanest natural fuel, and using it as a vehicle fuel significantly reduces environmental pollution. Biogas (natural gas) as a motor fuel is already a viable alternative to petroleum-based fuels at the current technical level.

In October 2020, the City of Tartu made it onto the international organization Green Destinations’ list of sustainable destinations in the Top 100 and was nominated in the Environment & Climate category.

Winners were announced at the international virtual tourism fair ITB Berlin in March 2021.
