Experience Tartu Nightlife

Small city, long nights

Tartu may be a small city, but its evenings are anything but quiet. As the sun sets over the Emajõgi River, the city gradually comes alive. Everything is within walking distance – you can start your evening by the river, head to a concert, continue to a cosy bar, meet new people while wandering through the city and end up somewhere you never planned to find.

Start by the river

Not sure where to begin? Head to the Emajõgi River. During summer, the riverside is one of the best places to spend a warm evening. Find a seat on a terrace, watch the boats drift by or simply enjoy the sunset before the night begins.

Several great venues line the riverbanks. Väike Kuuba is a true summer favourite, famous for its mojitos and laid-back atmosphere. If you’re looking for something livelier later in the evening, continue to Hugo Bar, where the party often lasts well into the night. For dinner with a beautiful riverside view, visit Sulps Bar, while Green Room Café offers a peaceful oasis surrounded by greenery.

Want to experience Tartu’s student spirit? Head to Möku and Genialistide Klubi, two neighbouring venues that perfectly capture the city’s creative atmosphere. Möku is a relaxed bar for conversations and drinks, while Genialistide Klubi hosts concerts, club nights and cultural events throughout the year.

For a more energetic night, Trepp is one of Tartu’s best-known dance clubs. Kivi Bar is known for its colourful interior, several dance floors and open atmosphere. It is a popular spot for both students and locals looking to dance, meet friends and enjoy a lively night out. Beer lovers shouldn’t miss Pühaste Kelder, the taproom of one of Estonia’s most celebrated craft breweries, where you’ll find more than twenty beers on tap.

Not every evening has to end on the dance floor. Tartu is also an excellent destination for wine lovers! Enjoy carefully selected wines, cosy interiors and a relaxed atmosphere in some of the city’s favourite wine spots.

Vein ja Vine combines a welcoming wine bar with an art gallery atmosphere, knowledgeable sommeliers and carefully selected wines. Vint Winebar & Tapas brings Mediterranean flavours to the heart of Tartu’s Old Town, offering delicious tapas and wines in a cosy setting.

If you enjoy cafés that transform into wine bars in the evening, Aega On! in the Supilinn district is an excellent choice. For those who prefer wine with dinner, Bar Paral·lel serves carefully selected wines alongside creative dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.

Wine, tapas and unhurried evenings

If cocktails are more your style, Tartu won’t disappoint. You may start the evening quietly, but it will probably stay with you longer than planned!

Right in the heart of the city, on Town Hall Square, Blood Milk Water welcomes guests with warm lighting, carefully selected music and inventive signature cocktails by Regeri Zoo. It is the kind of place where one drink can easily turn into a whole evening. Nearby, beneath the words “Tartu Forever”, you will find Willy&Rudy, a lively bar whose selection starts with more than 50 different gins.

For something a little more unconventional, head to the Aparaaditehas creative district. Krabi X Gaffer bring a colourful, creative and distinctly local atmosphere to the area. Everything here feels a little more relaxed and spontaneous—the kind of place where you stop by briefly and end up staying much longer.

In the heart of Karlova, Barlova is a must for anyone who enjoys neighbourhood bars with personality. Expect a cosy interior, colourful locals on both sides of the counter, Estonian craft beer, Saiakangi coffee, Italian wines and pizza.
