Emajõgi, which flows through both the city and county, connects Lake Võrtsjärv and Lake Peipus. It is the only river in Estonia that is navigable along its entire length. In the Middle Ages, Emajõgi was a vital trade route; today, the river and its bridges are important symbols of Tartu. During the summer, you can enjoy swimming in the river, riverboat rides, and canoe trips.
