Tartu St. John’s Church spire

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating

St. John's Church is dedicated to John the Baptist. It is a medieval brick church known for its terracotta figures. The oldest parts of the current building date from the 14th century. The church has been in ruins many times throughout history. In 1999, the church received a new spire and two new bronze bells named after Peter (Peetrus) and Paul (Paulus). The approximately 30 m high bell tower, which has 135 steps and the diameter of the narrowest place is 47 cm, offers a wonderful view of the whole city of Tartu: you can see the Old Town, Toomemägi, Supilinn district, River Emajõgi and, of course, the beautiful roof ridges. In summer, concerts take place here.
