Tartu Angel’s Bridge (Inglisild)

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating

When you walk to Toomemägi (Toome Hill) in Tartu, you will certainly notice the Inglisild, which was built in 1838 based on the design by architect J. W. Krause. There is a bar relief of G. Fr. Parrot, the first rector of the University of Tartu which was reopened in 1802, with the words 'otium reficit vires' (rest restores strength) on the bridge. Interesting facts: the name of the bridge probably comes from the name 'English bridge' as the park was established in the English style. Several legends are associated with the bridge. For example, it is said that when you hold your breath while running over the bridge, your wish will come true. National register of cultural monuments
