From 1 July 2017, it is possible to apply for funding from the Tartu City Government to help organise your conference.
The main aim of supporting the conferences is to raise awareness of Tartu as a conference destination. In addition, this would also decrease the seasonality of the local tourism industry, increase the number of tourists as well as strengthen cooperation between the conference organisers and the tourism sector. The funding is intended to support conferences that take place in Tartu for at least 2 days and whose no less than 200 participants are all accommodated in Tartu. The maximum sum for one conference is 5000 euros and both private individuals as well as public institutions can apply for the funding. The applicant does not need to be a citizen of Tartu, rather than the conference itself taking place in Tartu. 40 000 euros has been planned in the budget of the city for the year 2018 and the funding will be granted twice a year: for the first half year in December and for the second half year in June.
Conferences that take place between 1 January to 30 June, the applications must be submitted by 1 October the previous year, and conferences between 1 July to 31 December, by 1 April. The applications must be submitted to the City Government’s Department of Public Relations.
By 1 October of the present year, there were 10 applications for funding. However, as one application was not in accordance with the requirements, the total sum was divided between 9 conference organisers.
According to Kaia Lehtsaar, the Executive Manager of the Tartu Convention Bureau, the first round of the conference support was very successful and she hopes that the interest will be even higher in the future. This year, academic conferences were leading the application process but corporate conferences are also more than welcome to apply.
