Tartu Nature House’s long-standing family days are starting a new year again. The first “Our Feathered Friends” will take place on the morning of January 18 and will introduce little enthusiasts to the birds that live in their backyards and what they can be fed with.
The family days teach both children and adults tips for a more environmentally friendly life and introduce activities related to different species, natural phenomena, seasons and holidays. The family days also give parents the opportunity to learn about nature and spend quality time with their children. The topic of birds is relevant especially in the context of extreme weather events occurring against the backdrop of climate change, where winters can be alternately very warm or snowy, and this instability affects the migration times of birds and the survival rate of those who stay here.
On the first family day, we will get to know the birds that have stayed here for the winter. Why do birds stay here for the winter, what do they eat and how can I help them? Through various playful activities, we will learn about the bird species that can be found in winter, especially in the city garden.
We will learn to use binoculars and observe the birds that are active in the bird feeder of the Nature House. We will find out what they eat and we will also try how difficult or easy it is to peck with the beaks. In the winter garden, you can also follow the trail of looking for bird pictures. In the craft room, we will make a nice bird to take home.
The nature house’s animal room and winter garden will also be open throughout the morning. The participation fee is 4 euros.
